The picture shows part of one city that has major floods fairly frequently and would be a good example to use - where is it, and which river is this?
Enjoy the holiday - and don't forget to take lots of geographical pictures (especially from Egypt - you know who you are!!).

An area of the UK prone to flooding is Shrewsbury. This was caused by heavy rainfall on waterlogged ground.I learnt rapid run-off causes soil erosion and high velocity increases flood damage.Collapsable flood barriers were put up in Shrewsbury to solve the problem.

Which river(s) Suzy? How successful have the collapsible barriers been? Have any other measures been put into place?

The flash flood in Boscastle of August 2004 took everyone by surprise. Although floods in Boscastle are not regular the valley is shaped like a V this can naturally make the water easier to run off the valley above and cause a flood?? The river overflowed and because of high rainfall the flood was caused?? Beacuse Boscastle was at the floor of the valley it was effected.
York lies within the Vale of York, a flat area of arable land bordered by the Pennines, North York Moors and Wolds. The ings are flood meadows along the River Ouse, while the strays are scattered around the city in marshy, low-lying places.
During Roman times, the land surrounding the rivers Ouse and Foss was very marshy, making it easier to defend. The city is prone to severe flooding from the River Ouse, and has an extensive (but not always effective) network of flood defences. These include walls along the Ouse, and a barrier across the River Foss where it joins the Ouse.
The floods of late October and early November 2000, which were the highest for over 350 years, caused much damage, but the water did not breach the (sandbag reinforced) flood walls. Much land within the city has always been too flood-prone for development.

York is an area prone to flooding. After the river Ouse flooded due to heavy rainfallin 2000, many people lost their homes until it was safe to return. Raised embankments in the countryside near York were built next to the river and stronger defences in the city were built. There also has been some thought of a new river being built, joining the Ouse and Derwent rivers so the flows into the Humber estury.

I'm intrigued about this new river being built Kieran - how would that work?!
York.
There are currently over 250,000 properties at risk from flooding in the region - in autumn 2000 over 1,000 properties were flooded when many rivers reached record levels following heavy rainfall. During this period over 50,000 properties were protected by Environment Agency flood defences.
The North East region owns and maintains over 2,000km of raised riverside flood defences, with further investment taking place each year.

An area in the UK prone to flooding is Boscastle. This was caused from heavy rainfall and stormy weather from the oceans. Bostcastle is sited in a steep valley beside the mouth into the sea. Because of this heavy rainfall, the sea had broken through land ripped through Boscastle. This destroyed some homes but no death. Ste Smith 10KJE
Boscastle is an area prone to flooding in the UK. Boscastle is in Devon and was flooded a few yeas a go. It was flooded because of heavy rainfall and the village is surrounded by steep valleys so the rain would run off and down into the village. Josh
An area prone to flooding in the uk is Cornwall. On the 20 August 2004 A flash flood devastated a small town in the north of Cornwall after the equivalent of two months' rainfall came down in just two hours. Many cars and houses in Boscastle were washed away by the downpour, which travelled at speeds of 40 miles per hour. The river rose by seven feet in one hour, and seven aircrafts where used to rescue people stranded on the roofs of buildings, in trees and in cars.
