Penguin!

Well done to Tanith who spotted a penguin last Saturday morning...

None about this morning, but a fair few seals on the beach...

South Georgia!

It's been far too long since I've had a look at the fantastic South Georgia webcams... It's looking pretty cold and miserable there today, but there are plenty of seals about! Prize for the first SHS person to spot a penguin and send me a copy of the image with the date and time....

Yay! The return of the penguins!!

The seals have been back for a while, but I've just spotted the first penguins of the year on the South Georgia webcam! Webcam 1 is the original webcam, and you can also look at the seals closer up on Webcam 2...

Whilst it's getting colder here, things are warming up in South Georgia, and the seals are enjoying the sunshine on the beach...

Not had a look at the South Georgia site for a while... There are now two webcams - and it's looking pretty wintery there!

Penguins....

Especially for 8PBh, seeing as the penguins are never there when you're looking!

Things are warming up in South Georgia!

As the temperatures are falling here, things are warming up in South Georgia. 8PBr were very interested to have a look at the fantastic South Georgia webcam this morning, and there's now a seal lying on the beach! Not long now til the return of the penguins!


For those of you new to Geogtastic, if you click on the South Georgia label at the bottom of this post, you will be able to see all the other posts about South Georgia. There are several other pictures taken from the webcam, so you can see how the weather, wildlife, etc are different at different times of the year!

A wintery day in South Georgia

It occurred to me today that it was quite a long time since I'd looked at the wonderful South Georgia webcam... A rather wintery day!

Winter in South Georgia

It's getting cold in South Georgia now - although there are still a couple of brave penguins about...

Penguins in Africa??

Well, you've seen the penguins in South Georgia... Now you can see them on a sunny beach in South Africa!! Geography teacher David Rogers has posted this fab video on his blog, of the penguins at The Boulders, on the Cape Peninsula in South Africa.



Brought back happy memories from when I visited there - many moons ago in 1999. I've just dug out my photo albums, and here is a picture I took when I was there... The quality isn't great as it's from the "olden days" and I've had to scan it. More of my South Africa photos might follow!

Just spotted this man on the beach on the South Georgia webcam...

He's gone now, but left something on the beach...

What a lot of penguins!

Plenty of penguin activity on South Georgia today... According to other geography teacher fans of the webcam, there's been lots of other activity recently as well, though I seem to have missed it all....

Make the most of the penguins though... they'll be off soon as winter approaches...

They've [been] moved!

This is the webcam image from 22.14... Those penguin-movers have been out again, and it looks like they've been at the clouds as well!

(At least, it was 22.14 on my computer clock... Blogger is obviously in its own time zone!)

Those "penguin-movers" have been busy!

My Yr13 group seem to think that the penguins that appear on the beach in front of the South Georgia webcam have been put there, and are moved about every so often...

If they are correct (and I somehow doubt they are!), the penguin-moving people have been busy today!If, for some reason, you are not already addicted and visiting the webcam several times a day, click on the picture...

Penguin Spotting!

This webcam on the island of South Georgia was pointed out a while back by a Scottish geography teacher friend, and watching the penguins on the beach in front of the camera is a great distraction from marking mock exams!

South Georgia is an island in the South Atlantic, and is at about the same latitude relative to the South Pole as the north of England is to the North Pole, but is much colder than the UK - can you find out why?

Because South Georgia is in the southern hemisphere, it is summer there at the moment. Keep visiting and watch how things change when winter arrives...
